چکیده

V ictor L. Klee passed away on August 17, 2007, in Lakewood, Ohio. Born in San Francisco in 1925, he received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Virginia in 1949. In 1953 he moved to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was a faculty member for 54 years. Klee specialized in convex sets, functional analysis, analysis of algorithms, optimization, and combinatorics, writing more than 240 research papers. He received many honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship; the Ford Award (1972), the Allendoerfer Award (1980 and 1999), and the Award for Distinguished Service (1977) from the Mathematical Association of America; and the Humboldt Research Award (1980); as well as honorary doctorates from Pomona College (1965) and the Universities of Liège (1984) and Trier (1995). For collaborations with the first listed editor he received the Max Planck Research Award (1992). Klee served as president of theMathematical Association of America from 1971 to 1973, was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1990, in honor of Klee’s 65th birthday and the broad range of his mathematical interests, the two of us (long-time co-worker and former Ph.D.

A d - PSEUDOMANIFOLD WITH fo VERTICES HAS AT LEAST dfo - ( d - 1 ) ( d + 2 ) d - SIMPLICES

Barnette was the first o prove that if fk is the number of k-faces of a simple (d+l)-polytope P then (*) fo • dfd' (d-1)(d+2). He later extended (*) to a graph-theoretic setting and was thereby enabled to prove the dual inequality for triangulated d-manifolds. Here his methods are used to provide a different graph-theoretic extension of (*) and thus extend the dual inequality to simplicial d-ps...

On a Conjecture of Carmichael

V. L. KLEE, JR. 1 Carmichael [ l ] 2 conjectured that for no integer n can the equation (x)=n ( being Euler's totient) have exactly one solution. To support the conjecture, he showed that each n for which there is a unique solution must satisfy a restriction which implies w>10. In this note we prove the validity of restrictions considerably stronger than those of Carmichael, and raise the...

A Geometric Proof of Ryll-nardzewski's Fixed Point Theorem by I. Namioka and E. Asplund

In [4], Ryll-Nardzewski gave what he called an 'old-fashioned' proof of his famous fixed point theorem. The purpose of the present note is to give an even more old-fashioned proof of the fixed point theorem. In fact, our proof uses nothing more than a category argument and the classical Krein-Milman theorem. Our terminology and notation shall be those of Kelley, Namioka et al. [2]. The followin...
